Enterobius vermicularis (Pinworm) – Adult

  • Habitat in human: Large intestine – caecum and colon
  • Diagnosis of infection: Microscopic examination of perianal scraping to detect eggs
Morphological Features
  • Colour: Yellowish white
  • A cuticle surrounds the body
  • Posterior end is pointed like a pin in female
  • Three muscular lips around the mouth
  • Has wing-like expansions on each side of head
  • Prominent bulb in the oesophagus – only nematode human to show this
Male
  • Size: up to 2.5 mm long; male smaller than female
  • Posterior end is blunt and curved ventrally; bears six sensory papillae and a single copulatory spicule
Female
  • Female: 8 – 13 mm in length
