- Round to oval with scattered brown pigment
- Parasitised red cell larger than normal
- May almost fill the RBC
- Chromatic mass is eccentric and red
- Cytoplasm homogeneous, without vacuoles; blue (macrogametocyte) or light blue to pink (microgametocyte)
- Pigment is scattered
