Fasciola hepatica – Egg

  • Detected in faecal specimens of infected human
  • Eggs immature when passed
  • Not infective to human
  • Miracidium hatching from egg is infective to snail intermediate host

Very similar to F. buski egg and difficult to differentiate between the two

Diagnostic Features
  • Size: Large; 145 µm x 80 µm (range, 120-150 µm x 63-90 µm)
  • Shape: Broadly oval
  • Colour: Pale yellow brown
  • Small, flat operculum, but not clearly seen
  • Shell is thin
  • Contains an unsegmented ovum when passed
